If you happen to celebrate the Halloween festivities, your house may be inundated with excess of candy, treats, and sweets. If you are concerned about losing weight and have recently been focusing on improving your health, then these few weeks with extra tempting treats around the house may wreck some havoc on your plan and efforts.
Here are a few tips you can use to help minimize the effect this holiday will have on you and hopefully keep you focused on your health and fitness goal.
Watch Out For The Halloween Junk!
Don’t Open The Candy Bags Until Halloween
One of the worst things you can do is open up those bags of candy you are planning to pass out to trick-o-treaters on Halloween. You will likely find that once the bag is open, your hand will repeatedly dive into it to grab a few candies at a time. Over the weeks, you may find that your hand is going into that bag a number of times per day.
Guess what that will inevitably add up to? Quite a bit of extra needless calories tacked on to your daily total. To make matters worse, you will likely get thirsty after eating all that candy, you may choose an unhealthy beverage and compound the snacking episode.
Avoid this altogether by storing your Halloween candy out of sight until it’s time to hand out. Your body and teeth will thank you in the long run.
Watch Out For The Special Treats In The Market
On your last trip to the supermarket you probably noticed the fancy decorations throughout the store. You may have also noticed, particularly in the bakery section, an influx of Halloween related goods in the form of cupcakes, cookies, cakes, and other similar-type treats.
As cute and creative as they are, these calorie packed disasters will do nothing beneficial for your weight loss efforts. Worse yet, if you do happen to purchase a dozen cupcakes or cookies, do you really think that you’ll just eat one or two? Per day likely, and that container will inevitably become empty as time goes on leaving you with nothing to show but added weight on your body.
Save yourself the headache and don’t buy those items in the first place.
What To Do When You Want A Treat
Finally, if you must have something sweet to satisfy your craving, try to avoid the mini milk chocolate bars since those are generally around 70+ calories each. And often people don’t just have one but often 3-4 at a time.
Instead, opt for a small hard candy that takes longer to breakdown giving your mouth something to do. This may help take away the urge to eat more since it is longer-lasting and you will only be putting about 10-20 calories into your body.
If you are in the mood for something cold or dessert-ish, you can always choose to have something like jello or frozen yogurt. If you want to include some Halloween decor, simply add some orange and black sprinkles or make a ghost made with a bit of whipped cream with two dark chocolate bits for eyes.
