My name is Gregory L. Gomez, LAUSD school teacher and author of HealthyChoicesInLife.com, and I know from personal experience the woes of being overweight and obese. At one time I weighed nearly 300 pounds which meant I was practically 100 pounds overweight!
I can’t tell you how many times over the past decade I tried to fix this problem and lose weight, but always after a couple weeks of attempting to run and eat healthier my efforts unfortunately fizzled out. Time and time again I would start out with an intent to get in shape but would quickly give up and get right back to my old bad habits.
I realized one of the main reasons why this happened was due to the fact that I did not have a specific exercise program with a schedule to help keep me focused to stick with the plan. The entire “get in shape” process was left up to me to figure out – Which exercises to do? What workout plan to follow? When and how often to exercise?
On top of that, it was always relatively easy for me to simply give up and quit after 15 minutes of working out. In other words, I would run around a couple blocks near my house, decide that was enough, and just turn around to head back home.
Even with a gym membership, unless you are taking aerobic or exercise classes led by an instructor, you will still need to come up with a plan how you will use all the equipment. Again, that takes a great deal of discipline and self motivation to do this week after week. If you are not used to doing this on your own then your workout efforts may also be short lived like mine were.
This actually happened to me when I had a monthly membership to LA Fitness. Can you believe that I only attended a grand total of five times in a six month period?!? I just wasn’t motivated to get in my car after a long day of work and drive for 20 minutes to sweat, get tired, and then have to drive myself home afterwards.
Still to this day I shake my head in disgust at the money I wasted.
If you are self-motivating and have no problem coming up with your own exercises to do 4-6 times per week, by all means go for it. Just keep in mind that if you are truly going to accomplish your goal of losing weight and getting into shape, along with eating in a healthy manner you will need to get some form of exercise.
