My name is Gregory L. Gomez, a Los Angeles Unified School District teacher and author of HealthyChoicesInLife.com. Unfortunately I know from personal experience the woes of being obese. At one time I weighed nearly 300 pounds meaning I was practically 100 pounds overweight!
I can’t tell you how many times over the past decade I tried to fix this problem and figure out how to reduce weight, but the solution to this problem always eluded me. After a couple of weeks attempting to exercise and eat healthier, my efforts quickly fizzled out. Time and time again I would start out with an intent to get in shape but would give up and get right back to my old, bad habits.
To make matters worse, being that substantially overweight as I approached turning 40 years old became a major concern for me. I refused to allow myself to succumb to health related issues attributed with obesity.
I realized one of the main reasons why I was repeatedly unsuccessful with the weight loss process was due to the fact that I did not have a specific exercise program to help keep me focused on my fitness goal. The entire “get in shape” process was left up to me to figure out – Which exercises to do? What regiment to follow? When and how often to workout?
On top of that, it was always relatively easy for me to simply give up and quit after 15 minutes of working out. The motivation was just not there. In other words, I would jog around a few blocks near my house, decide that was enough, and just turn around to head back home. I had no motivation or anyone inspiring me to continue which really made this a difficult habit to maintain.

This is one of the biggest hurdles you will have to cross when focusing on this portion of healthy living – exercising consistently.
Even with a gym membership, unless you are taking aerobic or exercise classes led by an instructor, you will still need to come up with a plan how you will use all the exercise equipment. Again, that takes a great deal of discipline and self motivation to do this day after day, week after week. If you are not used to doing this on your own then your workout efforts may also be short-lived if you choose the gym membership option.
Plus, $40-$80 per month for a gym membership works out to be $480-$960 per year! Personally, I would much rather spend that money on other things than a membership to a gym.
This actually happened to me a couple of years ago when I purchased a monthly membership to a popular local gym LA Fitness. Can you believe I only attended a total of five times in a six month period. Five visits in 180 days!
I just wasn’t motivated to get in my car after a long day of work and drive for 20 minutes to figure out what to do to cause a sweat, and then have to drive myself home afterwards. Still to this day I shake my head in disgust at the money I wasted on that gym membership.
If you are self-motivating and have no problem coming up with your own exercises to do 4-6 times per week, by all means go for it. Just keep in mind if you are truly going to accomplish your goal of losing weight and getting into shape, along with eating in a healthy manner you need to get some form of regular exercise.
Point being, sticking with a consistent workout routine not only helps burn off those excess calories (fat) from your body, but more importantly your regular fitness routine will also greatly help inspire you to stick with healthy eating.
