Healthy Question of the Week 6

question of the week 6Dear,

I’m a terrible snacker. When I get home from work I always have the habit of pouring a large glass of soda, grabbing a big bag of Doritos or Cheetos and then plopping myself down on the couch to watch tv for about an hour. I do this almost everyday – probably a reason why I’m about 150 pounds overweight. I know I should stop doing this but it’s so hard to break this habit. Any advice?

Healthy Question of the Week 6

Dear Joe,

Ahhh the dreaded snacks. Unfortunately these are the sneaky culprits that continually throw a wrench into the engine causing it to sputter and stall. In this case the stall is in the weight loss process or unfortunately a slight gain each time unhealthy snacks are consumed.

To help remedy this issue right away you need to get rid of the junk. If you feel bad about throwing food away, box it up and give it to a neighbor, a local church, or shelter that accepts donations. With unhealthy snacks out of your household, you can now focus on healthy items without having the temptation of that 2 liter bottle of soda or giant bag of potato chips on the kitchen counter staring at you.

It’s important to remember that eating snacks in between meals is a very healthy, positive habit to maintain. You should keep your body nourished so that it does not become starved for something to eat while waiting for the next meal to arrive. When your body feels as if it is deprived, that’s when those darn cravings kick in and you likely know what often happens next – anything and everything goes down the hatch.

In order to avoid these types of situations from occurring, have healthy snacks all pre-portioned and ready to be eaten. Once you have a number of healthy snacks you like on hand in your refrigerator or cupboard, half the battle is already over.

To help you start out, here’s a list of 10 healthy snacks that are super easy to make and taste great!

Each one of these snacks when tied hand-in-hand with a tall glass of water will tide you over to your next meal. Best yet, they are less than 200 calories each so you can delight in the fact that not only will you be nourished enough to make it to your next meal, but you did so in a way that caused no harm to your daily calorie total.

Naturally it will take a bit of effort to change your habits especially if you have been snacking in an unhealthy manner for a long time. However, know that through your continued effort and diligence you will eventually shed the weight you are trying to be rid of.

Hope you find this information helpful.
