Greetings and welcome to HealthyChoicesInLife.com – an online resource to help readers develop a healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition and consistent exercise. My name is Gregory L. Gomez, a 39 year old teacher for the Los Angeles Unified School District and have been teaching 5th grade in South Los Angeles for the past 13 years. Educating and inspiring the youth of tomorrow brings a joy that warms the soul which is why I truly love the work I do.
I was born and raised in Southern California where I attended St. Paul High School in Santa Fe Springs (go Swordsmen! and then right down the street to Whittier College most famously known as President Nixon’s alma mater.
I was very active as a child and adolescent playing a wide variety of organized sports such as tennis, basketball, baseball, volleyball and soccer. My mom even had me learn how to clog (tap dancing to country western music) and perform all over in her group the Melody Ranch Cloggers.
As you can tell I had a pretty active youth from age 6-21. However once I graduated from college and stopped playing sports, that’s when I started packing on the weight. Unfortunately from 1996-2012 I did hardly any exercise whatsoever and about the same amount of cooking. Fast food practically became a daily habit for me, occasionally even purchasing all 3 meals in one day from a bag given to me at the drive-thru window.
Looking back on how I used to live my life I am quite ashamed that I neglected my health and let my eating habits get so out of control.
So often I would go to McDonalds for breakfast and get 2 bacon, egg, cheese biscuits, hashbrowns and a large orange juice. For lunch, Jack N the Box for a Jumbo Jack combo with a large soda and french fries along with two tacos. Finally for dinner I’d frequent Taco Bell where my favorite meal was 3 soft tacos, a bean burrito with no onions, a Nacho Bellgrande, along with an extra large Mountain Dew.
It’s easy to figure out the reason why I gained so much weight going from 185 pounds when I played basketball at Whittier College in 1994 to 278 pounds in September 2012.
Sure, over the past 10 years I’ve feebly attempted to remedy my weight situation and fix the problem, but I never could make my changes stick longer than a week or two.
That’s one of the main reasons why I started this website. Not only to track my own progress throughout this journey to become healthy, but to hopefully act as an inspiration to others who may be in a similar situation. Often it just takes the right motivation to start working towards your own personal health goals.
Currently as of January 2014, I am proud to be 40 pounds lighter along with having a 12.1% reduction in body fat! This was strictly through eating in a healthier manner and getting some type of exercise 3-5 times per week. It’s been a journey, but one that has gotten easier with time and perseverance.
If YOU have been wanting to eat healthier, exercise more, and lose weight, here’s the perfect opportunity to join me. I still have another 30-40 pounds to lose before I reach my goal, but it’s the process that has been so inspirational. I hope that through my dedication and efforts, you will be inspired to do the same.
