Throughout the year there are a number of days when you may be stuck indoors on account of the weather outside. Whether it be snow, sleet, hail, rain, or just a really windy day, all of these scenarios can throw a temporary wrench into your outdoor exercise plans.
Depending on where you live the number of days stuck inside may be rather numerous, so instead of simply giving up on your plans to exercise, here are 5 indoor workouts you can do to still get exercise right in the comfort of your home.
5 Indoor Workouts When You’re Stuck Inside
Indoor Workouts #1: Yoga/Calisthenics
Here’s a great way to get your body more limber along with working out various muscles in your body. Yoga builds strength and dexterity, but it’s also a form of meditation and an opportunity to de-stress. However before you take on any type of yoga or calisthenic moves it’s important to learn proper form and technique to help avoid injury. You can get instruction from someone who may teach a class around your area, or look online to find either Youtube videos or websites where you can get instructional advice. Then all you’ll likely need is a yoga mat which costs as little as $10 and off you go.
Indoor Workouts #2: Workout Videos
Another excellent way to exercise at home is with workout videos. What makes these so great is that there are literally hundreds of different types of videos you can get your hands on. Keep an eye on the difficulty level because this can make or break your workout experience. Be sure to read the descriptions first and maybe some reviews posted by actual customers. They will give you real-life experiences what they found to be either positive or negative about the program in question. Indoor Workouts #3: Cleaning The House
Here’s a way to not only get that body moving but clean the house at the same time. You can vacuum, clean the blinds and windows, mop the floor, dust the furniture and fans, clean the bathrooms. All these activities require movement. You can even maximize the activity by either wearing ankle/wrist weights while you are doing these activities, along with doing squats, lunges, push ups, and situps in between the various chores. Putting your favorite music on will help make this experience much more enjoyable and the time will fly by.
Indoor Workouts #4: Lifting Weights
Another indoor activity you can do when the weather is not cooperating is to lift weights. You don’t necessarily need to have a weight lifting bench since free weights will work just as well. Just be sure you learn proper technique and start with an appropriate weight amount so you do not strain yourself. You can also get a variety of different size weights to diversify your exercise routine so you don’t become bored with the same repetitive workout.
Dumbbells, kettlebells, sandbags, free weights, along with the traditional bench with a bar can slowly be bought over time so you will soon amass a nice assortment of weight lifting equipment. Start small and with the exercises that seem most appealing to you or that focus are particular areas of the body you want to improve. Again, take a quick moment to do an Internet search or look on Youtube and you should find many different exercises using free weights.
Indoor Workouts #5: Exercise Bike/Treadmill
If you live in an area that gets a ton of rain or snow during the fall and winter, you may want to consider getting a treadmill, exercise bike, or other apparatus if you have the space and extra money to spend. Remember though, if you are torn justifying spending $400+ dollars on an exercise machine, you really should take the time to not only research one that you will prefer the most, but also make the firm commitment to stick with a consistent workout routine.
It would be extremely wasteful to spend half a thousand dollars on something that will just end up collecting dust in the corner of your garage or playroom. You can be guaranteed your significant other will not let you hear the end of that needless purchase if you don’t regularly use your exercise equipment.
